Nedbank CEO Mike Brown said South Africa\u2019s collapsing infrastructure prevents companies from investing in South Africa.<\/p>\n

Brown shared this information during News24\u2019s \u201cOn the Record\u201d summit, where experts discussed the country\u2019s biggest issues.<\/p>\n

He said large corporate customers need South Africa\u2019s infrastructure to work before investing in new mines, factories, and other businesses.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo much of our economic infrastructure, including energy and logistics, are under the control of state-owned monopolies, and it does not work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

When there is insufficient energy, or the railway system does not work, companies cannot invest in new projects.<\/p>\n

He said Nedbank was doing an international investment roadshow in March and April this year and was faced with a tough question.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe sat with a United States pension fund investing in assets worldwide. Their one-liner was, \u2018How can we invest in a country which can\u2019t keep its lights on?\u2019\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n

To attract new investment, South Africa must fix the infrastructure side of the economy, like electricity and logistics.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnless we do that, there will not be large-scale investment. Nobody will put money into the country without it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He highlighted that corporate customers spend money to keep their existing businesses competitive. However, there is very little investment in new projects.<\/p>\n

There is one exception \u2013 energy. \u201cWe are seeing a tsunami of energy investments,\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n

South Africa became irrelevant to international investors.<\/h2>\n
