{"id":1162,"date":"2023-01-23T10:19:25","date_gmt":"2023-01-23T10:19:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.innov8fs.co.za\/blog\/?p=1162"},"modified":"2026-03-18T11:46:27","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T11:46:27","slug":"sygnia-sp-500-etf-versus-satrix-sp-500-etf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.innov8fs.co.za\/blog\/2023\/01\/23\/sygnia-sp-500-etf-versus-satrix-sp-500-etf\/","title":{"rendered":"Sygnia S&#038;P 500 ETF versus Satrix S&#038;P 500 ETF"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1163\" src=\"https:\/\/www.innov8fs.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/SP-500-1024x576-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.innov8fs.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/SP-500-1024x576-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.innov8fs.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/SP-500-1024x576-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.innov8fs.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/SP-500-1024x576-1-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An analysis by Daily Investor shows that the Satrix S&amp;P 500 ETF delivered better results than the Sygnia Itrix S&amp;P 500 ETF.<\/p>\n<p>Satrix and Sygnia are South African fund managers that specialise in passively managed, index-tracking exchange-traded funds (ETFs).<\/p>\n<p>Satrix is the largest local ETF provider with a market capitalisation of R38 billion, while Sygnia ranks second with R33 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Both fund managers offer an ETF which tracks the S&amp;P 500 \u2013 a stock market index tracking the performance of 500 large companies listed on US stock exchanges.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Satrix S&amp;P 500 ETF<\/li>\n<li>Sygnia Itrix S&amp;P 500 ETF<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These ETFs have the same mandate of tracking the performance of the S&amp;P 500. However, there are subtle differences in management fees and tracking accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>The Satrix S&amp;P 500 ETF has a total expense ratio (TER) of 0.25%, while the Sygnia Itrix S&amp;P 500 ETF has a TER of 0.20%.<\/p>\n<p>Intuitively it looks like the Sygnia ETF should outperform the Satrix ETF because of its lower fees, but it is not the case.<\/p>\n<p>Daily Investor tracked the performance of a R100 investment in each of these funds from 2017, which revealed that the Satrix S&amp;P 500 ETF produced higher returns.<\/p>\n<p>The R100 investment in the Satrix S&amp;P 500 ETF grew to R198 over five years \u2013 higher than the Sygnia Itrix S&amp;P 500 ETF\u2019s R185.<\/p>\n<p>The annualised return for the 5-year investment period was 13.85% for the Satrix Investment and 12.41% for the Sygnia investment.<\/p>\n<p>Satrix\u2019s better performance is likely a result of the different tracking and rebalancing strategies between the two ETFs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1164\" src=\"https:\/\/www.innov8fs.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/1-15.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1003\" height=\"591\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.innov8fs.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/1-15.jpg 1003w, https:\/\/www.innov8fs.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/1-15-300x177.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.innov8fs.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/1-15-768x453.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1003px) 100vw, 1003px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An analysis by Daily Investor shows that the Satrix S&amp;P 500 ETF delivered better results than the Sygnia Itrix S&amp;P 500 ETF.
